Onimusha: Way of the Sword Story Trailer Confirms Coming Characters

Capcom used the Tokyo Game Show 2025 to share a new story trailer for the upcoming action game, Onimusha: Way of the Sword. This trailer provides a clear look at the story and the expanded cast that will support the legendary main character. The new footage highlights the important role of Miyamoto Musashi, focusing on his personal struggle as he faces a demonic threat. Fans have eagerly awaited the return of the swordsman to the genre. The trailer shows that mastering the blade alone won’t be enough to defeat the supernatural forces against him; he will need to rely on the franchise’s signature demonic gauntlet.

Musashi’s journey revolves around accepting the gauntlet’s demonic energy. The trailer emphasizes the challenge he faces, as he must balance his commitment to traditional martial skills with the need to use a supernatural tool. This is where the newly revealed supporting characters become essential. They are not just background figures; instead, they help guide Musashi on a path of self-discovery. He must ultimately embrace the gauntlet’s power to reach his goals. Their involvement transforms the story from simple monster-slaying to a deeper exploration of true strength and sacrifice, revealing a depth not often seen in earlier entries.

The footage, shown during the Capcom Online Program, still featured the intense, fast-paced combat that characterized the original series. However, the clear shift toward character and story development suggests a more thoughtful approach to rebooting the beloved franchise. This renewed focus follows a long break for the series, with the last mainline entry released nearly twenty years ago. The decision to bring back Onimusha was first announced in 2024 after a successful remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, which re-energized the fan base and showed a continued interest in the series’ mix of historical settings and gothic horror.

By focusing the story on one of Japan’s most legendary figures and surrounding him with a strong cast of characters to aid his emotional and martial growth, Onimusha: Way of the Sword aims to be a key release for the publisher. The cinematic style and dedication to character development indicate that Capcom is seriously investing in making this a true comeback for the franchise. Set to launch in 2026, the game is generating significant excitement among long-time fans and new players attracted to its blend of historical epic and dark fantasy action.
