It seems EA has bold plans lined up for their flagship shooter franchise as according to industry analyst Michael Pachter, EA wants to turn their Battlefield series into a yearly title in the same vein as of their competitor, Activision’s juggernaut franchise Call of Duty. Patcher has said that the General Manager of the Battlefield franchise, Byron Beede, has revealed to him of EA’s decision which is to have three studios working on the Battlefield series over a three-year cycle, which would effectively mean an annual release for each of the games.
This is also completely identical to Call of Duty’s yearly release model and according to Patcher, it would take the Battlefield series at least 5-6 years to come to this point.
However, it certainly seems that a yearly release could impact the Battlefield series pretty negatively as one of the most distinguishing aspects of the series over Call of Duty is their development schedule which is much longer and thus allow for significant improvements and additions in each release, which isn’t the case with COD a lot of the time. But even if the series could move into a yearly schedule in the far future, it would likely happen in the form of incremental updates than full fledged games, which could be made viable in some ways, perhaps.
In other news of Battlefield, the previous title in the series, Battlefield 2042 will receive a wave of new incoming contents including a free new pass for Battlefield 6 (titled ‘Road to Battlefield 6’) plus new weapons along with a complete reimagining of the game’s fan favorite Iwo Jima map. The Road to Battlefield 6 pass will also grant access to a total of 50 “exclusive cross-rewards” including 20 for Battlefield 6 that will be available and ready for all players on launch day. These new contents seem like a way to reward players of Battlefield 2042 in the upcoming Battlefield 6, which is always welcome.
Battlefield 6 is slated to be released on October 10 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
