NetEase Hints at Original Character Creations for Marvel Rivals

The roster of Marvel Rivals, the hero shooter developed by NetEase, may soon expand in an unexpected way. A recent report suggests that the developers can introduce original characters to the game’s lineup. This would mark a significant shift from simply adapting well-known figures from the comics. This news comes from Marvel Rivals Creative Director Guangyun Chen, who confirmed that NetEase is not limited to the established heroes and villains of the Marvel universe. This revelation opens a new chapter for the game’s long-term content strategy.

Since its launch, Marvel Rivals has mainly focused on including familiar faces, with regular updates adding characters like the Fantastic Four, Ultron, Emma Frost, and Phoenix. This method has successfully tapped into Marvel’s rich array of beloved characters, keeping fans engaged. However, the confirmed ability to create new heroes could bring a fresh layer of unpredictability and depth to the game. It gives developers the chance to design characters tailored for the game’s fast-paced, 6v6 combat. This could introduce unique abilities and playstyles that do not fit neatly within the existing lore.

While the idea of original characters is exciting, it also poses a strategic choice for the development team. The report hints that a logical next step for NetEase might be to focus on a long list of fan-favorite characters who have not yet entered the game before introducing completely new ones. This seems like a sensible approach to keep player interest and meet expectations. However, Chen’s vague response of “stay tuned” when asked if a new character is in the works leaves the possibilities open.

Ultimately, the ability to create original characters allows Marvel Rivals to evolve beyond merely adapting existing IP. It offers a level of creative freedom that could help the game maintain its long-term commitment of at least ten years of support, as promised by NetEase. The decision to introduce a new hero, if and when it occurs, will be a key moment for the title, shaping its identity for years to come and setting it apart in the crowded hero shooter genre.

Playground Games Confirms 15-to-20 Hour Campaign for Fable Reboot Playground Games has confirmed that the upcoming Fable reboot will feature a mainline story lasting between 15 and 20 hours. Speaking during a group press session at Gamescom 2026, associate game director Will Kennedy outlined the scope of the project, stating that the central questline is paired with a similar 15-to-20-hour block of side quests and open-world exploration. Beyond authored content, the developers emphasized that the title’s simulation and life systems allow for indefinite play depending on player investment. Full coverage of the interview context can be found in Polygon’s developer Q&A. This targeted duration keeps the reboot in line with the structure of Lionhead Studios' original trilogy rather than the massive scale of modern role-playing games. The 2004 original averaged roughly 12.5 hours for its main path, while Fable II and Fable III clocked in at approximately 13 and 13.5 hours respectively. By keeping the core path concise, Playground Games appears focused on density and narrative pacing rather than padding out the experience with mandatory filler. Community reception to the announcement has leaned positive, particularly among veteran players who prefer tightly structured campaigns over 100-hour commitments. As discussed in a active Reddit community thread, many players welcomed the focused runtime, noting that the series' signature alignment shifts and choice-driven paths naturally encourage multiple playthroughs. The game’s optional activities will include property ownership, local employment, and dynamic NPC interactions, extending gameplay well past the main story credits. Following previous delays, Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
