The video game world has experienced a whole new level of transformation with the record-breaking launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, officially breaking a new all-time launch week unit sales record for the United States in video game hardware. Nintendo console unit sold more than 1.1 million units in the week of June 7, 2025, figures not counted in My Nintendo Store sales, as reported by reputable data miner Mat Piscatella. The record-breaking first week supplants PlayStation 4 in its place, which so far had occupied the highly coveted position.

Record-breaking first week for Switch 2 contributes to only a very high degree of consumer demand and Nintendo’s endemic popularity in the very highly competitive console-based gaming market. Overall U.S. sales during its first full week are put at as much as 1.3 to 1.35 million units, the latter not yet firmly confirmed. Globally, the console broke new ground, with Nintendo formally announcing it as the quickest-selling unit of hardware ever in America and the biggest total four-day sales on any Nintendo console.

Hardware record success after Pilgrim was record-breaking software sales, and “Mario Kart World” as the biggest-selling launch physical game. A massive 79 percent of American Switch 2 purchasers acquired the title, either on its own or as part of a hardware bundle. Both “Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition” and “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” performed equally as well, selling as second best-selling physical game and third best-selling physical game, respectively. The quick adoption of the Nintendo Switch 2 is a testament to a rosy future for the console and serves to support Nintendo’s well-positioned place in the entertainment universe.
