Square Enix has reportedly put its long-rumored remake of Final Fantasy 9 on hold after years of internal development. According to RPG Site founder Alex Donaldson, the project was once very far along in production, but work has since stalled and is no longer moving forward.
While rumors surrounding a modern update to the 2000 PlayStation classic have circulated for years, momentum built significantly around the game’s 25th anniversary. Square Enix marked the milestone with commemorative artwork, merchandise, and music releases, yet notably refrained from announcing a new game. Donaldson noted that key artwork prepared for the remake’s box art was eventually repurposed for the anniversary campaign, signaling to industry observers that the project had encountered internal setbacks.
Unlike the massive, multi-part scope of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, the proposed Final Fantasy 9 project was designed as a single, standalone release with a more modest scale. Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida previously pointed out that recreating classic entries like Final Fantasy 6, 8, or 9 at modern AAA standards would require vast resources and multiple installments. The single-game approach for Final Fantasy 9 was intended to preserve the full story within a unified package, avoiding a drawn-out development cycle.
Despite the current halt, the project has not been explicitly canceled. Square Enix has a history of shelving titles only to revive them years later when strategy, budgets, or staffing allow. For now, the existing work remains archived, but fans hoping for an official reveal will need to temper expectations as Square Enix evaluates its broader line-up.
