Square Enix has officially scrapped the current version of Dragon Quest 12 to start development over from scratch, shifting the highly anticipated role-playing game into an entirely new creative direction. Alongside this internal reboot, the publisher confirmed that the project has dropped its original subtitle, The Flames of Fate, and will now be known as Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams.
The decision marks a significant pivot for the long-running franchise, which last saw a mainline release nearly a decade ago. While previous teasers hinted at a darker, more mature narrative tone for the twelfth entry, the new direction appears to abandon those plans. According to series creator Yuji Horii, the updated narrative will follow a new protagonist who is plagued by strange visions during sleep, prompting the main cast to search for a world that exists beyond dreams.
Despite the complete overhaul in development, key creative pillars remain attached to the project. The late Akira Toriyama’s distinctive character designs and Koichi Sugiyama’s musical compositions will still feature in the final game, maintaining the traditional aesthetic identity that has defined the series since the 1980s. However, because production has effectively been reset to zero, Square Enix has not provided a revised release window, meaning fans face a considerably longer wait.
To soften the blow of the delay, Square Enix announced that Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24. The 2017 predecessor currently stands as the best-selling entry in the franchise’s history. Additionally, the publisher revealed that a new spin-off title, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, is currently in development for multiple platforms and is scheduled to release in the near future.
