Double Fine has decided to unionize alongside other studios who seem to be doing the same under the Microsoft umbrella. So far, Microsoft remains neutral to these attempts, however I can see the company cracking down on people that they don’t like as per usual. Unfortunately the gaming industry is a mess, between disastrous releases that cater to no one and a general feel of passionless products coming from the triple A space there’s really an air that things could be much better. Of course, let’s not deny the fact that a ton of people have been sacked away from the industry in huge rounds of layoffs.
Double Fine does the right thing
The industry is harsh, and those who work on it are pretty much the people that matters and bring us the things we like, so of course they need to defend themselves. Unionizing is the way to achieve things, especially under harsh situations, and also when you are working under a company that is trying to push “AI” left and right before the imminent collapse of that grift. When some executives are too air headed sometimes you just have to push against them and tell them how things are done, “AI” can’t do games, it cannot write stories either or make anything compelling at all.
What Double Fine is doing is an example of what other studios should be doing in today’s day and age, pushing back against this system that seeks to replace us and remove the personality from everything we know and love. The only way to keep the quality of games is by fighting back against those who want to take it down to the bottom of the barrel. Enough of games that appeal to nobody, enough of safe attempts at making things that don’t mean anything, Double Fine should show us something crazy with this effort.
