Reports of a possible reveal of the next title in the Metro series have been surfacing for a while and now developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver have finally confirmed the newest entry in the series titled Metro 2039 which is the fourth mainline entry in the Metro Universe. And although we don’t have a working title yet, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the action in Metro 2039 in it’s official reveal and first look on this Thursday, April 16.
According to an Xbox Wire Post, the official showcase of Metro 2039 will start at 10 a.m. Pacific/1 p.m. Eastern and publisher Deep Silver’s website has also been updated with the following announcement: “Metro 2039 — Join us for the reveal of the next chapter of Metro.”
The last entry in the post-apocalyptic Metro series of games came in 2019 with Metro: Exodus which was lauded for it’s technical ambitions and tense gameplay. The Metro series of first person shooters are adaptations of the novel with the same name written by Dmitry Glukhovsky and are one of the most faithful examples of book-to-videogame transitions in the same vein as The Witcher series of games.
You can watch the official stream live on YouTube via the ‘Xbox First Look: METRO 2039 | 4A Games + Deep Silver’ premier on the official Xbox YouTube channel.
The Metro titles take place in the backdrop of the subway tunnels of a Moscow that’s devastated by a nuclear war and has the players fighting to survive against enemy human factions and dangerous mutants in a war-torn, post apocalyptic future. Metro 2039 takes place four years after the events of Metro Exodus (which was set in 2035) although it’s unclear whether the upcoming game will feature any of the characters from the older titles in the series.
Also, Metro Exodus was one of the best looking games when it came out and it’d be interesting what the devs can do with today’s graphical technologies and Ray Tracing.
