FSR 4.1 is Based on the Same Neural Network as the Upgraded PSSR on the PS5 Pro

AMD has recently rolled out it’s new version of upscaling named FSR 4.1 with Adrenalin 26.3.1 which is the newest driver for it’s Radeon 9000 series of graphics cards so if you have either one of the 9060s or the 9070s, you’ll be able to experience FSR 4.1 in action. And according to PlayStation architect Mark Cerny, the FSR 4.1 upscaler from AMD is based on the same neural network as that of the newly upgraded PSSR seen on the PS5 Pro. He recently stated the following on his Twitter/X page:

“Just tried FSR Upscaling 4.1 in a few PC games. It’s based on the same neural network as the upgraded PSSR we released for PS5 Pro… and it looks stunning!”

MD’s SVP and GM for computing and graphics, Jack Huynh, also responded to Cerny’s post by stating: “Project Amethyst has been an absolute pleasure and a true co-engineering success with you and the @PlayStation team.”

The new and upgraded version of PSSR recently came out on titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Silent Hill f, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and more. The improvement in image quality is very much noticeable in all of these titles which really hammers it home that the new version of PSSR is a step in the right direction for delivering realistic looking visuals while not compromising on FPS. It also means that FSR 4.1 is going to provide the same level of visual fidelity in games that support it which is great if you have the newest gen GPUs from AMD.

Of course considering that the PS5 as well as the PS5 Pro have AMD GPUs running in them, the similarity in technology to that of the desktop GPUs is only natural and kind of inevitable.

And looking at what NVIDIA is doing with their DLSS 5 right now which seems more like an AI filter that clearly results in generic and lifeless visuals, AMD’s FSR seems all the more promising cause at least their tech doesn’t interfere with the original art direction like NVIDIAs which tries to take out the human element from videogame visuals.
