Bethesda to Sunset The Elder Scrolls: Blades This June

Bethesda Softworks has announced the permanent closure of The Elder Scrolls: Blades, marking the end of the mobile spin-off’s six-year run. According to a recent update from the developer, the game is scheduled to shut down its servers on June 30, 2026. In anticipation of the final sunset, the title has already been delisted from digital storefronts across Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch, preventing new players from downloading the experience during its final months of operation.

Originally launched in May 2020, Blades was positioned as a core-adjacent experience that brought the franchise’s signature first-person dungeon crawling to handheld devices. The narrative focused on a member of the legendary Blades forced into exile following the Great War, tasking players with rebuilding their hometown through a mix of town management and simplified combat. Despite the pedigree of the IP, the game struggled to capture the same magic as its mainline predecessors, often hampered by its reliance on a chest-opening mechanic that drew significant ire from the community.

The critical reception for Blades remained starkly different from Bethesda’s other mobile ventures. While Fallout Shelter and the more recent The Elder Scrolls: Castles found success through engaging loops and more palatable monetization, Blades sits with a score of 37 on OpenCritic. Players frequently cited the aggressive microtransactions and the repetitive nature of its procedural dungeons as major barriers to enjoyment. These foundational issues likely contributed to a declining player base that ultimately made long-term support unsustainable for the studio.

As June 30 approaches, the Bethesda mobile games portfolio will shift its focus toward maintaining its more successful live-service titles. For the remaining players who stuck by the game since its 2020 debut, this marks the final chapter of a controversial experiment in bringing Tamriel to the small screen. With the game now removed from stores, the community has just a few months left to wrap up their adventures before the gates of the town close for good.
