Serious Sam Returns With Five-Player Roguelite Spin-off Shatterverse

Croteam’s long-running shooter franchise is taking a sharp turn into the roguelite genre with the newly announced Serious Sam: Shatterverse. Revealed during this week’s Xbox Partner Preview, the title moves away from the traditional linear carnage of the mainline entries in favor of a five-player cooperative experience. Developed to leverage modern hardware, the game is currently slated for a 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The announcement was a highlight of a packed broadcast that included major updates for Hades 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, yet Shatterverse managed to stand out by showcasing a visual style and gameplay loop distinct from Sam “Serious” Stone’s usual outings. While the core of the series has always centered on Sam Stone’s time-traveling crusade against the alien overlord Mental, this spin-off appears to emphasize team-based synergy. The inclusion of five-player co-op is a notable jump from the standard four-player fare found in most contemporary shooters, suggesting a chaotic battlefield designed for high-occupancy squads.

This transition into the roguelite space marks a significant milestone for the 25-year-old IP. Since its debut in March 2001, the Serious Sam franchise has largely defined itself through “circle-strafing” combat and overwhelming enemy counts. By introducing roguelite elements—typically involving procedurally generated levels and permanent progression systems—the developers are clearly looking to modernize the formula for a community that increasingly favors replayability and live-service hooks.

With six mainline entries and ten varied spin-offs already under its belt, the franchise is no stranger to experimentation, having previously touched everything from VR to mobile platforms. However, Serious Sam: Shatterverse represents one of the most substantial mechanical shifts in recent memory. Fans of the series can expect more specific details regarding character classes and weapon customization to emerge as we approach the 2026 launch window. For a series built on the mantra of “no cover, all man,” this new cooperative structure will be a true test of whether Sam’s brand of mayhem can thrive in a more structured, tactical environment.
