CD Projekt Red Bolsters Development Team for The Witcher 4

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed a significant expansion of the development team dedicated to the next entry in The Witcher franchise, signaling a shift into a more intensive phase of production. According to recent financial disclosures and developer updates, the studio has redirected a massive portion of its internal resources toward the project, internally codenamed Polaris. This move comes as the studio concludes its long-term support for Cyberpunk 2077, allowing the bulk of its creative talent to focus on the future of the Continent.

The latest development update indicates that while the game is still years away from a commercial release, the infrastructure is now in place to handle the immense scale required for a modern AAA RPG. This recruitment surge is particularly noteworthy given the transition to Unreal Engine 5, a departure from the proprietary REDengine used in previous titles. By staffing up now, CD Projekt Red is clearly attempting to avoid the technical hurdles that plagued their previous launch, ensuring that the foundational systems of this new saga are robust from the outset.

Narratively, the upcoming title represents the most significant pivot in the series’ history by moving away from Geralt of Rivia. The lead role will be handed to Ciri, a character whose Elder Blood and world-traveling capabilities offer a vastly different gameplay dynamic than the traditional monster-hunting of her mentor. This shift allows the writers to explore a different era of the world, potentially focusing on the rebuilding of the Witcher schools or the consequences of the planetary conjunctions that define the lore.

Despite the excitement surrounding these staffing milestones, the studio remains cautious about setting a specific release window. The legacy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remains a high bar to clear, and the current expansion of the workforce is a necessary step to meet the evolving expectations of the fanbase. For now, the project remains in the “pre-production” and early production stages, but the sheer volume of developers now assigned to Ciri’s journey suggests that the wheels are finally turning at full speed.
