CD Projekt Red has announced the upcoming expansion to their seminal The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt titled Songs of the Past during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live showcase with a full trailer highlighting whole new locations, characters and story beats. The expansion will serve as a bridge between the decade old title and the events of The Witcher 4, which is currently under development by CD Projekt and is slated for a 2028 release.
The new expansion comes out a total of eleven years after the last Witcher 3 expansion titled Blood and Wine, which was released to critical acclaim. Check out the official reveal trailer below:
The expansion takes players to Letten, a completely new area where the events of Songs of the Past take place as series protagonist Geralt finds himself surrounded by new monsters and humans, along with a mysterious enemy who is seen whispering throughout the new trailer. The devs have provided the following description of the new area that’ll set the stage for the events of Songs of the Past:
“This idyllic land is rich in rural tradition and folklore, and its people enjoy a fulfilling life of bountiful harvests and lavish festivals. But a dark secret lurks just beneath the surface, and Geralt must overcome never-before-seen foes as he fights to overcome its long-dormant evil.”
Another highlight of the upcoming expansion is a chain-like weapon which Geralt uses to grapple an enemy from afar and decapitates him, and the inclusion of the new weapon will definitely add more reasons to experience Songs of the Past.
CD Projekt Red level design lead Miles Tost also shared insights (from the gamescom ONL stage) on how the expansion successfully builds on the base game: “We had this idea for one more story with Geralt for a while, but we couldn’t quite figure out how to fit it into our busy schedules. Luckily, our friends from Fool’s Theory came around, and they hired a bunch of old veteran Witcher 3 developers – including my mentor, Peter Gelenscer – and here we are today.”
And although The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past currently does not have an official release date, it’s expected to come out sometimes in 2027 for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
