Developer Polyphony Digital, most renowned for making the iconic Gran Turismo series of racing simulators, are currently hiring lots of capable devs for what seems like Gran Turismo 8. Back in March, it was first reported that a new Gran Turismo title has entered development and with the latest job listings in the studio’s official website, it seems the development for the new title could be speeding up. Polyphony Digital is looking for the following roles, so if you fit any one of the categories, make sure to head out and submit your resume:
- Build Engineer
- Online Engineer
- Front-End Engineer
- Racing Game Programmer
- Application Programmer
- Pipeline Tool Programmer
- Graphics Programmer
- Sound Programmer
- Game AI Programmer
- Vehicle Simulation Programmer
- Game Engine Programmer
- UI Designer
- GT Explore Studio
- CG Artist
- Technical Artist
And one of the lines in the job listing page which really gives away that these development roles are indeed for the next Gran Turismo title, is this one: “The Vehicle Simulation Programmer will work to improve the vehicle simulation engine of the Gran Turismo series, and recreate mechanisms unique to individual cars.”
The racing simulator genre doesn’t have a lot of franchises right now, with the dominance of hugely successful arcade racers like the Forza Horizon titles of the recent years and the fact that the Forza Motorsport series has been on thin ice with developer Turn 10 being heavily affected by layoffs last year. But a new Gran Turismo game can cause a timely resurgence in the iconic genre, in more ways than one.
The Gran Turismo series has left an everlasting mark on the racing genre to the point that we wouldn’t have the racing titles that we do now if it hadn’t been for GT. The realistic handling model of cars, accurate physics and traction based on different terrains and other gameplay features that are now staple in all racing games, owe their existence to Gran Turismo cause it’s one of the games that had it all in the first place and pioneered the entire genre.
