It seems the upcoming open world RPG Fable is going to raise the bar for realism when it comes to NPCs, in ways that we haven’t really seen before as according to developer Playground Games, every NPC in the game is handcrafted instead of being arbitrarily generated through a randomizer, which is what happens in almost all other open world titles out there. This manual approach to non-playing characters will provide a great deal of spontaneity and emergent moments in the game, which will definitely enhance Fable in more ways than one and make the world of Albion truly come alive.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Fable director Ralph Fulton has explained their unique approach to in-game NPCs:
“We individually picked everything about every NPC to make it into an NPC that you could read, that made sense top to bottom. We originally had a tool that would randomize it, and just ‘roll’ an NPC, and that would have been a massive labor-saving device. That would have saved us so much time, but what we found was, they just didn’t make as much sense.”
One of the areas in the world of Fable is Bowerstone which is home to around 400 NPCs and with the devs’ handcrafted approach, each of them would feel totally unique and fully realized.
Fable was first showcased during this year’s Xbox Developer_Direct event in January and it’s currently confirmed for a 2027 release. Also, it’s the first game in the series to release on the Sony PlayStation platform, besides coming out for both Xbox Series X|S and PC.
It was also earlier reported that Fable will have a whole new and dynamic Morality system that we haven’t seen in videogames, ever: “How we think about morality in the world today has really informed how we wanted to represent it as a game system in this game. That’s to say: there is no objective good, there is no objective evil. Really it’s just about people’s subjective opinions and what they choose to value in someone else when they make that judgment.”
“So if a person sees you kicking a chicken, you will start to get a reputation as a ‘Chicken Chaser’ – and if enough people see you do it, or you do it a lot, that reputation will become one of the things you’re known for in that settlement. And people will react to you based on what they think about that particular reputation.”
