Capcom is having a stellar year in 2026 with all three of the company’s AAA titles being received with critical acclaim–from Resident Evil Requiem to it’s newest Onimusha: Way of the Sword which has successfully hit 1 million sold units on launch day. But what’s more interesting is a particular part of Capcom’s recent official statement addressing the commercial success for Onimusha, where the company said it’s currently focusing on releasing new titles from several of it’s IPs that haven’t had a new game in years.
“In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title.”
This also perfectly aligns with another official statement from Capcom last year where it was suggested that the publisher will be looking to revitalize their less popular franchises in the form of whole new projects or games.
And when we roundup all the underutilized IPs from Capcom in several years, the names that come up are Mega Man, Devil May Cry and Ace Attorney and you can also add Dead Rising and Marvel vs Capcom to the list as well.
But within the currently unused IPs from Capcom, what seems most likely to get a new release is Devil May Cry which is one of the most iconic pure action or character action series ever made and has also revolutionized the entire hack-n-slash genre more than once. The last entry in the series, titled Devil May Cry 5, came out back in 2019 and so the franchise seems ripe for a new game to revitalize it again, for a whole new generation of players.
Also, there have been multiple rumors indicating that the first Devil May Cry, which came out more than two decades ago, could be getting a remake and last month, Hideki Kamiya, who was the director of the title, had posted a tweet hinting that he could make a return to the legendary action franchise.
On August 9, a player asked Kamiya a lore-specific question regarding the first Devil May Cry game: “I’m playing through DMC1 right now and always wondered: What is the lore behind the DT dragon in the fight against Mundus? Is it the same as Vergil creating swords with his aura, or is it a familiar? Something else? Can you elaborate on this, please?”
And as a surprising response, Kamiya gave this mysterious answer: “It will become clear when I make the DMC series again…”, and while he didn’t follow up on the post but the fact that he wrote ‘when’ instead of ‘if’, suggests there’s indeed a possibility of him directing the rumored remake of the first game.
