A new patent that’s recently been published by Playstation indicates that players on the Sony platform may be able to make payments via their DualSense controllers in the near future, which would also allow them to use their phones to wirelessly connect to their controllers and pay through their payment applications.
First reported by Patentalyze (via Wccftech), the new patent was filed back in March 2025 but published on September 17, 2026 and can enable a controller to detect all payment information through a user’s personal device where their payment information is stored through protocols such as wireless NFC, Bluetooth and even physical contact between the controller and device.
“In response to receiving the notification, a first message that includes payment method information for a video game player associated with the video game controller is received from the electronic device, and a second message that includes the payment method information is transmitted from the video game controller to the video game console” .

So in a nutshell, your controller will first send a prompt to your phone, and then you can make the payment(s). This technology can remove the need to store payment information directly on the console which can lead to your banking credentials/digital payment ID being leaked if there are data breaches at PlayStation or if your account gets hacked, and thus can prove to be really helpful in more ways than one.
It looks like the patent will be fully implemented in the next-gen version of Playstation or the PS6 and is a part of Sony’s ongoing all-digital push for the future of videogames.
