Grand Theft Auto 6 Will Launch Without Online Multiplayer

Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games are officially framing Grand Theft Auto 6 as a strictly single-player experience for its upcoming launch, dampening hopes for an immediate multiplayer rollout. According to recent statements from the publisher, the company continues to label the highly anticipated project as a “single-player title,” while simultaneously committing to ongoing content updates for the existing Grand Theft Auto Online infrastructure.

This approach signals a clear break from the post-launch schedules of Rockstar’s previous releases. While both Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 introduced their online components within a few weeks to a month following their initial release, industry projections now suggest that a dedicated online mode for GTA 6 will not arrive until 2027 at the earliest.

The decision to isolate the single-player campaign at launch allows Rockstar to avoid the severe server overloads and connection failures that marred the debut of GTA Online back in 2013. By prioritizing the story of protagonists Jason and Lucia set across the fictional state of Leonida, the studio aims to deliver a stable narrative release without overburdening its network setup on day one.

In the meantime, maintaining support for the current iteration of GTA Online serves a dual purpose. It preserves a massive revenue stream while keeping the active player base engaged on existing platforms. Industry leaks have long hinted that the next-generation multiplayer framework will function as a massive sandbox with extensive user-generated content options, but fans expecting to jump into Vice City with friends on day one will need to settle for a strictly solo campaign for the foreseeable future.
