Blizzard Entertainment released full patch notes for World of Warcraft Patch 12.1, “Curse of Ula’tek,” ahead of its scheduled August 11 release. As the first major post-launch content update for the Midnight expansion, the patch brings sweeping class adjustments, a fresh outdoor zone, and structural tweaks to combat pacing before Season 2 officially starts a week later on August 18.
The centerpiece of the update is The Coiled Isle, a new outdoor zone situated off the eastern shore of Zul’Aman. Players will journey into the region alongside Zul’jarra to track down Zul’jan and deal with the lingering threat of Ula’tek, an ancient vengeful loa locked within the island’s depths. The zone features a dedicated regional talent tree to help counter localized environmental hazards, alongside rotating Curse Surge events, rare elite spawns, three new Delves, and a new world boss encounter format called Lairs, which support flexible group sizes up to 25 players.
A three-boss dungeon, Altar of Fangs, also arrives with the patch, opening immediately up to Mythic 0 difficulty. When Season 2 launches the following week, Altar of Fangs enters the active Mythic+ rotation alongside returning legacy dungeons, including Kings’ Rest and Ruby Life Pools. Season 2 also opens the doors to the Venomous Abyss raid, an eight-boss instance concluding with a direct confrontation against Ula’tek.
Systemically, Blizzard is making structural adjustments to combat balance by boosting player health pools and enemy damage output by 25% at maximum level. The developer’s stated goal is to reduce spike damage and create a more deliberate pacing for healers. Alongside these survivability changes, maximum-level damage-focused specializations are seeing an adjustment in power distribution: burst window cooldowns are receiving lower throughput, balanced by higher baseline damage for primary rotational abilities.
Player housing receives functional additions as well, introducing a layout sharing feature called Blueprints that lets players export and import complete interior and exterior designs via shareable codes. Pets can now roam around interiors using designated Pet Bed items, while four new neighborhood Endeavors expand local cosmetic options. Quality-of-life updates complete the patch, headlined by an upgraded Cooldown Manager capable of tracking potions, trinkets, and racial abilities.
