Quake just got an unexpected and amazing free update in 2026

Quake

Quake is back for some reason, and hopefully this is some teaser towards something new happening at the downsized id Software. A new update has been announced and it surprised all of us who have been playing Quake since 1996, it is amazing to see such an old game get what essentially is a 30th anniversary update. Hopefully there’s more to come because id Software has been taking shots from all places, firing, restructuring, and even worse, key figures leaving. What Microsoft has done to the legendary studio is unspeakable and I hope Microsoft pays the consequences for the damage done.

Quake gets bigger

This is completely unexpected because its a very old game that shouldn’t be having more updates, it was already finished and the community was satisfied. But if the quality of what comes next is good, then everyone should be grateful for the work put into the game even if it has been 30 years since its prime. There is a ton of new stuff, pretty much a new campaign that finally closes the nightmare, I’m not too familiar with Quake lore but considering it does still connect with the previous story, that was waiting for around 30 years on a sequel to drop.

The fact that the game still remains old is also an awesome tidbit that more games should do, even if it is old it keeps working on modern hardware because there’s a team that loves this game. Not every single core member might remain, but the love of id Software for the art they make is something definitive. That’s why the layoffs and everything Microsoft has done to the company never ceases to sadden me, and it might only get worse from now on. Regardless, the game is currently going for 60% discount, its old, but its gold.
