Kingdom Hearts 4 will launch without delays in late 2027, series creator and director Tetsuya Nomura confirmed during the D23 expo in Anaheim. Addressing widespread fan skepticism regarding the project’s timeline, Nomura emphasized that development is moving faster than internal estimates and that the team is fully committed to delivering the long-awaited title next year across all current-generation platforms.
Alongside co-director Tai Yasue, Nomura used the D23 Kingdom Hearts panel to assure attendees that the late 2027 window is set in stone. The director explicitly addressed online rumors predicting a slip in the schedule, stating directly that the game will arrive on time. Yasue corroborated the statement, adding that the team is “100 percent” confident in meeting the 2027 deadline as production continues smoothly at Square Enix’s Tokyo studio.
The panel also yielded substantial new detail regarding gameplay and story elements, headlined by the reveal of a world based on Pixar’s Coco. Footage shown at the event highlighted Sora exploring the Land of the Dead alongside Miguel and Hector, complete with themed attire and a specialized Keyblade. An extended cut of the trailer confirmed that King Mickey, Donald, and Goofy will all be playable characters, while also offering a look at updated character designs for Riku.
The 2027 release places Kingdom Hearts 4 in a major line-up for Square Enix, joining titles like Final Fantasy 14: Evercold and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Beyond the main game, Nomura confirmed his ongoing involvement in the Kingdom Hearts animated series currently in production for Disney+, while original voice actors Haley Joel Osment and David Gallagher appeared on stage to recreate classic scenes from the franchise, marking their first joint live performance.
