ZeniMax Online Studios is introducing full underwater combat to The Elder Scrolls Online in its upcoming Update 51, marking a structural first for the long-running franchise. Launching September 28 alongside the High Seas of Tamriel event, the mechanic gives players free 3D mobility, full ability usage, and underwater encounters against humanoid foes and high-level bosses. While previous titles like Morrowind and Oblivion allowed basic melee swings or touch magic in shallow waters, and Skyrim removed aquatic encounters entirely, Update 51 represents the series’ first fully integrated underwater battle system.
The expansion comes during a turbulent period for Bethesda and parent company Microsoft following widespread layoffs across the gaming division in July. Despite losing key development staff, ZeniMax confirmed that live-service operations for ESO remain on schedule. Game Director Nick Giacomini reaffirmed the studio’s commitment to the roadmap, following closely on the heels of Update 50, which revamped the Dragonknight class and reintroduced the Thieves Guild storyline in Glenumbra.
Mechanically, seafloor combat retains the base game’s real-time combat flow while introducing environmental survival elements. Players must track air bubbles to manage breath reserves while navigating deep-sea zones for specialized loot. Participating in the event unlocks daily Deep Plunder Boxes, which yield trade bars, cosmetics, rare antiquity leads, and an event-exclusive Ornaug mount. The system is designed to seamlessly integrate into standard group content and solo exploration rather than functioning as a isolated minigame.
By implementing dynamic underwater mechanics ahead of The Elder Scrolls 6, ZeniMax is using its live-service platform to test features that mainline single-player titles historically struggled to realize. With Bethesda’s next mainline installment still several years away, the MMO continues to serve as the principal testbed for evolving core franchise systems. The High Seas of Tamriel event runs from September 30 through October 14 across all major platforms.
