Final Fantasy: Blackmoon Prophecy Remake has officially launched on PC, offering classic turn-based RPG enthusiasts a massive, 50-plus hour adventure entirely free of charge on itch.io. Developed independently by creator UPRC, the fan-made project serves as a total overhaul of the original 2011 release built in RPG Maker MV. The game draws heavy design inspiration from the 16-bit era of Square Enix’s franchise, particularly 2D classics like Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI.
The narrative follows dragoon Vahn Vainstrong, who is dispatched to investigate growing unrest around the Kingdom of Branch’s Crystal of Water before uncovering a broader threat to the world of Gaia. Rather than maintaining strict continuity with the original release and its 2017 sequel, UPRC overhauled the story enough to classify this remake as a distinct alternate canon. The expanded roster features 22 playable party members alongside six guest characters, spanning a wide array of classic job classes.
To complement the core campaign, the project incorporates substantial side activities, including a 100-battle challenge mode at the Gygas Arena, a Moogle hide-and-seek minigame, and casino games at the Rotunda of Revelry. For players using low-spec hardware, the download includes a dedicated legacy client that disables demanding visual effects such as Mode 7 rendering, environmental fog, and complex battle transitions. Early post-launch support has moved quickly, pushing the build to version 1.12 shortly after release.
Early metrics indicate that player demand for traditional, turn-based JRPGs remains strong despite the commercial genre’s pivot toward real-time action. UPRC reported that the game achieved its projected 18-month download goals within its first ten days of release. Following this launch, the developer plans to step away from fan games to work on original projects, confirming that Blackmoon Prophecy 2 will not receive a similar remake.
