Nintendo Switch 2 Overtakes GameCube Lifetime Sales in the UK

Nintendo’s Switch 2 has officially surpassed the GameCube’s lifetime sales in the United Kingdom, marking another major commercial milestone for the hybrid system just over a year into its lifecycle. According to industry analyst Christopher Dring, the new hardware has already cleared the total UK unit sales achieved by Nintendo’s 2001 home console. The rapid adoption rate underscores the strong commercial momentum Nintendo continues to enjoy across European markets following its latest launch.

With the GameCube now in its rearview mirror, the Switch 2 stands as the 13th best-selling home console of all time in the UK market. Within Nintendo’s own home hardware lineage, it currently occupies fourth place, trailing directly behind the Nintendo 64. Dring revealed that Switch 2 hardware sales in the region increased by 16 percent during the first half of 2026 compared to the prior year, driven by steady software momentum and sustained retail demand.

The GameCube originally managed approximately 1.15 million units in the UK during its entire lifecycle, reflecting an era when Nintendo struggled to establish a firm foothold against Sony’s dominant PlayStation 2 and Microsoft’s entry into hardware. By contrast, the Switch 2 reached the one-million-unit threshold in the territory roughly 30 weeks faster than the original Switch. That stark contrast highlights how dramatically Nintendo’s market position in Great Britain has evolved since the early 2000s, turning what was once a tough territory into a primary stronghold.

Industry attention now turns to whether the Switch 2 can mirror this regional success on the global stage. Nintendo’s last official financial figures placed the system’s worldwide sales at 19.86 million units, putting it within striking distance of the GameCube’s final global count of 21.74 million. With momentum bolstered by key software titles and consistent hardware supply, Nintendo is expected to confirm in its upcoming quarterly financial update that the Switch 2 has officially overtaken the GameCube worldwide as well.
