Mojang has officially revealed that Minecraft is introducing a new craftable Cushion item in an upcoming game drop, granting a feature that players have actively requested since the sandbox game’s earliest alpha builds in 2009. The long-awaited addition was detailed in a recent developer blog titled “SIT DOWN! NEW FEATURES INCOMING!”, confirming that players will no longer need to rely on makeshift workarounds like trapping boats or minecarts to make their characters sit.
According to the developer update, the new Cushion can be crafted by arranging three Wool Slabs in a horizontal row. Once placed on any flat surface, players can simply interact with the Cushion to seat their character. To accommodate diverse building aesthetics, Mojang confirmed that the item will be available in 16 distinct color variations, matching the game’s existing dye palette. The feature is currently available for testing in the Java Snapshot, Bedrock Beta, and Preview versions ahead of its full launch.
Beyond the sitting mechanic, the five-minute developer blog outlined several other additions scheduled for the same Q3 2026 update. Among these is the Straw Bed, a disposable item crafted from three Hay Bales that allows players to skip the night cycle without overriding their permanent spawn point, though the bed breaks immediately after a single use. The update will also introduce the Poplar Wood block set, Shelf Mushrooms, and highly requested building components like Wool Stairs and Wood Slabs.
These new items will primarily populate the upcoming Dappled Forest biome, a fresh environment that will also feature Abandoned Camp points of interest. This content rollout represents Mojang’s continued shift toward smaller, more frequent “game drops” designed to steadily evolve the core gameplay loop. While the final update is slated for release later this year, the immediate availability of the Cushion in preview builds allows the community to finally experience a feature seventeen years in the making.
