Former Lead Writer David Gaider Explores Potential Return to a "Darker" Dragon Age

Former BioWare Lead Writer David Gaider has revealed he would be open to returning to the Dragon Age franchise to steer it back toward its dark, traditional roots, despite believing the series may currently be dead at Electronic Arts. Speaking in a recent interview with PC Gamer, the veteran scribe—who served as the narrative anchor for the series from Origins through Inquisition—expressed a distinct desire to strip the franchise back to its fundamental appeal and explore more dangerous themes if ever given the opportunity to take the reins once more.

These comments arrive two years after the launch of 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a project that marked the first mainline entry developed entirely without Gaider’s involvement. The sequel ultimately missed internal financial expectations, an outcome EA executives later attributed to a distinct lack of modern live-service features. In the wake of the game’s commercial underperformance, a round of significant layoffs swept through BioWare, leaving the long-term future of the fantasy RPG property deeply uncertain as the publisher pivots toward other priorities.

Reflecting on his lengthy tenure at BioWare, Gaider noted a historical disconnect between the publisher’s executive expectations and the creative identity of the series. He recalled an internal development culture where corporate management routinely demonstrated a lack of faith in the property, occasionally treating the high-fantasy RPG as a secondary priority compared to its sci-fi counterpart, Mass Effect. Having stepped away from the franchise in 2015 to allow fresh creative voices to guide the narrative, Gaider admitted he has chosen not to play the latest installment due to his intimate knowledge of behind-the-scenes development friction.

Currently, Gaider is directing his creative energy toward independent development at Summerfall Studios, a venture he co-founded following his departure from BioWare. While his current independent team faces contemporary industry-wide challenges in securing project funding for their upcoming heist RPG, Gaider remains an influential voice in role-playing game history, leaving a definitive blueprint for what a potential revival could look like.
