Thief Remastered might be one of the most awaited games for those who are enthusiast of retro gaming relics of the past. This PC release will be happening eventually in the coming months, perhaps for 2027 if I have to be honest. There is a ton of things to expect in 2026 considering everyone is trying to avoid the release date of Grand Theft Auto 6 like the plague. Considering this is a retro classic that many people talk about in old PC game circles, perhaps the niche it targets is a different one from that of the casual masses.
Thief Remastered will look good
Respecting the original art style and intention is always a must when it comes to remasters, and they often don’t put enough effort in making them look good. However in the case it Thief it is clear that they went the extra mile to get the original maker of the cutscenes from 1998 to ensure everything is looking perfect. So far, the creator says that nobody will be disappointed with the result, so it makes me wonder if they kept the videos stored somewhere since the 90s into a separate hard drive. Techniques to render stuff like the old days are quite hard to accomplish.
Thief is a very important game, and it pretty much marked an era of PC gaming that does not seem to be as respected as it should. If it weren’t for these kinds of games then we would never have complex systems like we do in today’s games, not to mention that modern gaming should give more leeway to older games and gaming concepts because they wouldn’t exist without them. Nowadays we just live on the era of polishing rather than innovating, and I would argue that while we still live in the 90s mechanically, there’s a certain charm that isn’t there anymore.
