Nintendo Leverages Classic Donkey Kong Titles for Switch 2 Achievement System

Nintendo is introducing a makeshift achievement system for the Nintendo Switch 2 through a newly announced event called the DK Challenge. Revealed during the latest Nintendo Direct, the event marks a rare departure for the company, which has historically resisted implementing a standardized, platform-wide trophy or achievement system like those found on Xbox and PlayStation hardware.

The event, which began on June 9 and runs through September 1 at 12:59 PM PT, tasks Nintendo Switch Online subscribers with completing specific gameplay milestones across retro Donkey Kong titles. Players will need to clear distinct levels or beat designated time trials in classic games originally released for the NES, SNES, and Game Boy. Fulfilling these objectives rewards participants with digital trading cards, mimicking the bragging rights traditionally associated with modern achievement tracking.

A significant portion of the event hinges on the recently released Donkey Kong Bananza. The title features exclusive developer challenges designed to test the limits of experienced players, alongside a concurrent Mario-themed crossover event offering unlockable Mario and Luigi costumes within its DLC packs. However, because Donkey Kong Bananza is a next-generation title, the entire DK Challenge event remains strictly exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2, leaving owners of the original hybrid console unable to participate despite having access to the older retro software.

This software gating highlights a clear shift in strategy as Nintendo actively accelerates its transition toward the Switch 2. While the original Switch continues to receive select software updates and minor releases, high-profile community events and major software extensions are increasingly being utilized as leverage to encourage the existing user base to upgrade to the new hardware.
