God of War Laufey stars Faye, Kratos’ wife in a spin-off adventure that takes place after her death in Ragnarok and the upcoming title is set to be a lot more action oriented experience in the same vein as the much older entries in the God of War series. And according to Ariel Lawrence, the director of the upcoming game as well as a writer of several God of War titles from the past, Laufey serves as a bridge between two different eras of the series–the combat-centric Greek era and the narrative heavy Norse era of the franchise that took off from the 2018 God of War.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, she stated the following:
“I like both of those things, so it’s really one of those, ‘Can I have chocolate and peanut butter together,’ right?… What does it look like for those things to come together, and who can do that the best for us? And, you know, offer that agility, that flexibility, but still, you know, stand toe to toe with who we need to?”
Perhaps Laufey is essentially going to be a mix of the two vastly different gameplay models of both eras of God of War, which means the game will feature the more fluid and dynamic combat system of the older titles, perhaps even leaning closer to the hack-n-slash genre of games, along with the heavy narrative beats and character themes that are the defining characteristics of the newer titles.
The upcoming God of War Laufey seems like an interesting detour for the decade-old franchise as it’ll likely help the devs explore another branch of the Norse mythology that’s apart from the mainline titles, while experimenting with it’s combat system to great effect and possibly create the most dazzling action title among the modern God of War games.
In other news of God of War Laufey, according to a recent post by Jason Schreier on his BlueSky account, we may not have to wait till 2028 to get our hands into the game: “in contrast to a lot of other big announcements, this one isn’t years away”.
