Windrose is a very popular game about pirates in an open world that managed to fill a niche people didn’t think would be filled with anything. This new PC game captured tons of sales and has managed to accrue a solid player base, however what these players didn’t know is that this game secretly caused the usage of their SSDs to skyrocket, to a point where it actually caused some harm. It is said that for these kinds of games this is a common issue, however there’s tons of proof that hint that Windrose wasn’t particularly well optimized on some aspects.
Windrose was dangerous
A fix was deployed recently with an update, and it seems that the developers behind the game took the criticism correctly, this should have been addressed during the time the game was being developed. Some people are beginning to wonder if the game was properly tested at all before being launched, while others argue some of the code might have been vibe coded, considering the track record of Pocket Pair, the publishing company, it seems that is a possible thing. I highly doubt that the developers behind the game have employed such measures however.
Windrose continues to captivate players across the world by offering an immersive experience filled with wonder and mystery, the survival experience feels polished enough and the sea exploration is quite an endearing aspect this game brings that others couldn’t really match. Perhaps we need more games of this kind that are successful to show the triple A studios how these things are done, once they have a framework perhaps they can surprise us with something even bigger. Regardless, the damages to SSD drives caused by Windrose do not seem to be that big, but its always good to checkup the health of your drives and backup stuff.
