One of the recurring complaints regarding the Call of Duty franchise has always been it’s technical limitations which may also have held back the newer titles in more ways than one. And part of the reason for that is all Call of Duty titles are made for previous-gen consoles as well as the current ones, severely limiting the technological scope of the games which can also affect their gameplay evolution. But it seems Call of Duty will finally leave behind all previous-gen platforms for good as publisher Activision has confirmed that the next title in the franchise is not being developed for the PS4:
“Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true,” the devs officially posted on May 4. “The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.”
Last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 came out on the PS4 and the Xbox One along with the current-gen consoles and by the looks of it, it’ll be the last title to have come out on the older generation hardware. And this could really unshackle the series in all the right ways as future titles as well as the devs’ visions won’t be limited due to technological limitations anymore, however, it remains to be seen how it affects the next game in the series which is currently rumored to be Modern Warfare 4.
The Call of Duty franchise has been accused by many players and critics for getting repetitive and stale for a long time and it seems this year’s Battlefield 6 and all the phenomenal success EA’s flagship shooter has had so far may actually force Activision and the devs to make changes to what has become a fairly familiar mold of gameplay, on a more fundamental level. And it seems the choice to leave behind last-gen consoles is part of the changes and will be reflected from the next title in the franchise.
