Certainly the most awaited videogame of all time, Rockstar’s upcoming open world behemoth GTA 6 will only release on the consoles at launch with a possible PC version sometimes in the distant future, as done by it’s predecessor GTA 5. And now, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has explained why GTA 6 won’t be making it to the PC in November this year when it launches for the PS5 and the Xbox Series X|S:
“Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core,” Zelnick said. “Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn’t there, if they’re not served first and best, you kind of don’t hit your other consumers.”
He is of course, factually correct as the majority of titles from the Rockstar stable has arrived on the consoles first and into the PC quite a bit later–GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, LA Noire and even Max Payne 3 had came out only for the consoles during launch. Also, the PC version of GTA 5 took more than a year to arrive, after being released on the consoles at launch which also resulted in the title being one of the best PC ports ever, accommodating a wide range of hardware available at that time.
However, the statement also seems like it indirectly points at the possibility of a PC version of GTA 6 which is more than likely to be released at some point in the future, so there’s that.
Also, there’s a huge reason why the PC version of GTA 6 simply can’t arrive during it’s launch on the consoles as Rockstar needs to take the necessary time to make sure when it actually comes out, it runs well on most hardware available at the time. After the awful PC port that was GTA 4, all of the subsequent PC releases from the developer ended up being terrific ports with great scalability and optimization. Also, being on track to break all sales records ever, Rockstar wouldn’t settle for anything less than an all-around great PC port which would obviously require it’s sweet time.
GTA 6 is slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
