Capcom has unexpectedly released a significant content update for Resident Evil Requiem, introducing a new gameplay mode titled “Leon Must Die Forever.” The DLC arrived via version update 1.300.000 as a “shadow drop,” becoming available across all platforms without prior marketing fanfare. While fans have been anticipating substantial story expansions, this free addition shifts the focus toward high-intensity replayability by leaning into the roguelike genre.
The “Leon Must Die Forever” mode functions as a spiritual successor to the “Ethan Must Die” challenge from Resident Evil 7, but with significantly expanded mechanics. Players step into the shoes of Leon S. Kennedy and are tasked with surviving twenty progressively difficult levels. Starting on the familiar Main Street of Raccoon City, the journey culminates in grueling encounters with late-game bosses like The Commander, Super Tyrant, and Victor. To access this content, players must first complete the game’s primary campaign.
True to its roguelike inspirations, the mode emphasizes resource management and strategic upgrades. Between levels, Leon can access “enhancements” to bolster his arsenal, such as increasing weapon firepower or improving the durability of his hatchet. Progress is marked by reaching glowing doors, but the stakes remain high: death results in a total reset of the run. To mitigate the RNG, players can spend points earned in the main campaign to influence weapon drops, while combat performance during the run earns temporary boosts.
This update provides a bridge for a community still looking for answers regarding the game’s narrative loose ends, such as the mystery surrounding Leon’s marital status and the fate of supporting characters like Grace. Although Capcom confirmed that dedicated story DLC remains in development, this action-heavy side mission offers a substantial distraction. With 11 new challenges to unlock and a focus on randomized level design, the mode aims to extend the life of Resident Evil Requiem well beyond its initial February launch window.
