Sony Aims to Improve Game Visuals Through New AI-based Technology

Although the PS6 could be quite far away but it won’t stop a number of PS5 titles to look considerably better than they do now, in some pretty unexpected ways. Sony Interactive Entertainment has recently announced that the company has acquired the UK-based machine-learning and computer vision company Cinemersive Labs, in order to “enhance gameplay visuals.” Not much is currently known about how the enhancement will actually happen but the company has developed a “Cinemersive AI” technology which can transform any image or photo to a “volumetric 3D experience.”

You can see a detailed demonstration at the company’s official website.

After the deal officially closes out, the company will be joining Sony’s Visual Computing Group, which is responsible for delivering “advancing state-of-the-art visual computing within games.”

“This includes applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, improve rendering techniques, and unlock new levels of visual fidelity for players,” Sony Interactive Entertainment said.

However, several factors of this deal are not disclosed including the overall financial terms and what specific titles would the new technology be applied to, in order to make improvements in their visuals. But it seems like the enhancements would be AI-based and pretty much on the software level which makes things unclear as to how much will be the improvement and in what ways would they be implemented. But if it indeed works as it’s advertised, then there is potential of many games on the platform looking significantly better in many ways without sacrificing performance which would be pretty great.

But if it ends up being closer to AI-slop in the same vein like NVIDIA’s DLSS 5, it’d be a massive disappointment from Sony. Maybe it’s best to keep fingers crossed till more official information is released which might be sooner rather than later.

In other news of the Sony platform, the PS5 has just received a significant price hike from April 2 which makes the price tag of a PS5 Pro a staggering $900 without taxes.
