Ninja Theory Reportedly Shifts Focus to Hellblade 3, Shelving Experimental Horror Project Mara

Ninja Theory seems to be concentrating on something familiar, as recent reports (via Game Watcher) suggest the studio has put aside its ambitious horror title, Project Mara, to begin work on Hellblade 3. While the developer has not made a formal announcement, internal changes at the Microsoft-owned studio show that the resources initially set aside for its realistic horror project are being moved to support the Senua saga. This change in direction is significant for a team that has spent years exploring a realistic, grounded approach to psychological horror.

The choice to focus on a third Hellblade installment likely comes from the need to take advantage of the franchise’s established identity after the release of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. By prioritizing this flagship IP, Ninja Theory is choosing a more certain path in an unpredictable development environment. Project Mara was initially presented as a “realistic representation of mental terror” set in a single, carefully recreated apartment. However, the technical challenges and limited appeal of such an experimental idea may have made it harder to promote compared to the cinematic, story-driven success of the Hellblade series.

This report arises during a time when Xbox Game Studios faces heavy scrutiny over the performance and output of its first-party developers. Moving directly into production for Hellblade 3 indicates a push for a more consistent release schedule, stepping away from the lengthy development cycles that have characterized the studio’s recent past. For fans of the studio’s more innovative ideas, the cancellation of Project Mara signals a missed opportunity for creativity. However, for the larger Xbox community, focusing on a tried-and-true franchise provides a clearer plan for the years ahead.

As the industry consolidates around major franchises, Ninja Theory’s shift mirrors a larger trend towards risk reduction. Whether Project Mara will eventually be released in another format is still uncertain, but for now, the studio’s future is firmly connected to the intense world of Senua. More details about Hellblade 3’s scope and timeline are expected to surface as the studio finishes its current production phase.

Playground Games Confirms 15-to-20 Hour Campaign for Fable Reboot Playground Games has confirmed that the upcoming Fable reboot will feature a mainline story lasting between 15 and 20 hours. Speaking during a group press session at Gamescom 2026, associate game director Will Kennedy outlined the scope of the project, stating that the central questline is paired with a similar 15-to-20-hour block of side quests and open-world exploration. Beyond authored content, the developers emphasized that the title’s simulation and life systems allow for indefinite play depending on player investment. Full coverage of the interview context can be found in Polygon’s developer Q&A. This targeted duration keeps the reboot in line with the structure of Lionhead Studios' original trilogy rather than the massive scale of modern role-playing games. The 2004 original averaged roughly 12.5 hours for its main path, while Fable II and Fable III clocked in at approximately 13 and 13.5 hours respectively. By keeping the core path concise, Playground Games appears focused on density and narrative pacing rather than padding out the experience with mandatory filler. Community reception to the announcement has leaned positive, particularly among veteran players who prefer tightly structured campaigns over 100-hour commitments. As discussed in a active Reddit community thread, many players welcomed the focused runtime, noting that the series' signature alignment shifts and choice-driven paths naturally encourage multiple playthroughs. The game’s optional activities will include property ownership, local employment, and dynamic NPC interactions, extending gameplay well past the main story credits. Following previous delays, Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
