Chrono Trigger Creator Suggests Possible Remake

Yuji Horii, co-designer of cult RPG Chrono Trigger on the SNES, revealed that he was “thinking about” a remake of the classic game could be on the cards. This came after a stampede of requests and rumors on social networking sites following Horii’s visit to a convention in Naples.

Released at first in 1995, Chrono Trigger was a joint effort by Yuji Horii, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and Akira Toriyama. Chrono Trigger is the tale of a group of heroes who journey through time to preserve the world from destruction that would annihilate the world. The battle system, endings, and music of the game were praised.

While earlier rumors of a remake were rapidly denied as a mistranslation, Horii’s recent comments have stoked the hopes of gamers again. According to Game Reactor, When asked following the convention in Naples whether he was ready to do it, Horii replied that he was prepared, considering the fan demand, especially since 2025 is the 30th anniversary of the title.

Horii’s rumor follows as a result of Square Enix’s HD-2D remakes proving to be successful, such as their Dragon Quest 3 remakes. This has raised speculation that the remake of Chrono Trigger might employ the same visual style. Nevertheless, nothing has been officially announced by Square Enix.

Being the brains behind Dragon Quest, Horii is also developing the coming Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake in 2025 and Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate. Very little has been published about Dragon Quest 12 up to now.

With 2025 marking the 30th anniversary of Chrono TriggerSquare Enix, the possibility of a remastered remake is a hotly debated topic amongst fans. Whether Square Enix has the intention of pursuing this much-desired fan request remains to be seen.

Recent reports indicate that Yuji Horii has acknowledged the numerous fan requests for a Chrono Trigger remake and has stated he is “starting to contemplate” the idea Game Rant. This contemplation aligns with the 30th anniversary of the game, fueling further speculation and anticipation among fans eager to see the beloved RPG reimagined for modern platforms.
