The Sleeping Dogs Movie is Reportedly in Development and May Star Marvel’s Simu Liu as Wei Shen

Recently Marvel Star Simu Liu who starred in Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has tweeted that he is currently working to bring a film adaptation of Sleeping Dogs to the big screen. Reportedly a movie based on the 2012 Action title is indeed in the works and Simu Liu is set to produce and play the role of protagonist Wei Shen in the film. This definitely sounds promising for all fans of the game as Sleeping Dogs is one of the few Videogame IP’s that has the potential to shine on the big screen and will greatly benefit Liu as the titular character in more ways than one.

In fact, a film adaptation of Sleeping Dogs starring Donnie Yen was first announced back in 2017, but quickly faded around a year later with Yen himself confirming the film was scrapped eventually.

“I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights,” Yen stated in an interview with Polygon.

“I waited for years. Years. And I really want to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately… I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right? I spent many, many years on it. It was an unfortunate thing. Well, on to better things.”

So the recent tweet from Marvel Star Simu Liu has definitely sparked new hopes for anyone who was looking forward to the film adaptation of the game, but so far it seems this time the film may finally be greenlit and will eventually come out. Liu has also hinted at the possibility of a sequel to the original Videogame which was released in 2012 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

“First a movie, then a sequel game for everyone… that’s always been the dream.”

Stay tuned for more updates regarding the state of the film or an upcoming sequel to Sleeping Dogs.
