FromSoftware’s next game, Elden Ring Nightreign, is shaking things up with the formula set in the initial title—one of the biggest surprises being the lack of Torrent, the ghostly horse that fans used for fast travel and exploration in Elden Ring.
Why Is Torrent Missing?
Torrent will not appear in Nightreign, and the game will feature new traversal mechanics, like Spectral Hawks, to facilitate the traversal of the world. This is a significant change from Elden Ring, where Torrent was a vital companion that enabled players to quickly traverse the Lands Between and access hard-to-reach areas through double jumps.
Other Controversial Design Choices
The loss of Torrent is not the only change that has raised eyebrows among the fans. Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature duos, and players will have to play alone or form groups in a three-player co-op mode. The move has left many confused, and it is yet to be seen if FromSoftware will make any changes in response to feedback from the community.
Launch Date and Network Test Issues
Elden Ring Nightreign releases on May 30, 2025, but there are some gamers already accessing it through the Elden Ring Nightreign Network Test. The beta has unfortunately been riddled with critical server problems, not allowing invited gamers to actually play the game. B-tests such as this ought to iron out issues like these before release, though, so there is a lot of expectation that the retail copy will be better.
While there have been some concerns, initial reactions to Nightreign have generally been positive, with the game combining Elden Ring’s open world with a new three-day system and battle royale features. Whether players will eventually come to love these changes—or will instead continue to call for changes such as the reinstatement of Torrent—will be shown by the time Elden Ring Nightreign releases in May.
