Marvel Rivals developers have dismissed speculation they planted false information in the game to deceive dataminers. The developers shut down the speculation in a recent interview with IGN, stating they are interested in developing the game rather than misleading leakers.

The controversy started when fans thought that NetEase Games intentionally seeded false information into Marvel Rivals files to deceive dataminers. This left players in the dark about leaked content, such as possible new skins, characters, and maps. Although some fun was had imagining developers “trolling” leakers, rumors created arguments about the authenticity of future content leaks.

When asked, Wu dissuaded gamers from tampering with game files and revealed the news that adding new characters in Marvel Rivals is a time-consuming process with several steps involved. Koo further explained the analogy of datamining being like reading the graffiti of an individual without knowing the context. He said straight out that the company does not care about tricking dataminers, commenting, “We would rather spend our time developing the actual game.”

This comment indicates that simply because there is some information—like details about Ultron’s powers—available, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the character will be implemented in the near future. Rather, it might mean that the villain was taken into consideration at least regarding development, but his implementation isn’t finalized. Koo instructed players to think about leaks as ideas and not necessarily as official.

Meanwhile, players of Marvel Rivals won’t be waiting long for fresh content. NetEase Games has indicated that it will add a new character every six weeks, so a constant supply of new characters will be forthcoming. Season 1: Eternal Night Falls, however, coming on February 21, is special. The update will bring a number of Fantastic Four heroes into the game, including Human Torch and The Thing, a new map, and some balance changes.

With its regular update schedule and new content in the pipeline, Marvel Rivals is still generating buzz, and it’s showing that its future is bright—whether dataminers beat them to it or not.
