Less than two weeks after its PC release on January 23, 2025, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has received its first update, aimed at improving stability and fixing key performance issues. While the game has seen impressive player numbers on PC, some users reported crashes, frame rate drops, and rendering problems—particularly in the open-world sections.

Key Fixes in Patch 1.001

According to an announcement on the game’s official Steam page, version 1.001 primarily focuses on stability and graphical improvements. Some of the key updates include:

  • Improved game stability by fixing multiple bugs and crashes.
  • Steam Deck compatibility: The game will now launch with Low graphics settings by default, ensuring smoother performance.
  • Default DLSS settings: PCs that support Nvidia DLSS will now automatically use it as the default anti-aliasing method.
  • Updated DirectStorage DLL for better asset streaming and faster load times.

These fixes are expected to enhance the overall experience, particularly for players who encountered technical issues at launch.

A Strong Start for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC

Despite some early technical hiccups, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has performed exceptionally well on PC. During its first weekend, it amassed nearly three times the concurrent players as Final Fantasy 7 Remake did in 2021. The PC version retains all the original PS5 content, but benefits from enhanced graphics, higher frame rates, and modding support—which has already led to a surge of player-made modifications.

Interestingly, game director Naoki Hamaguchi has openly supported modding, even admitting to using a few mods himself. However, he urged players to be mindful of what they install.

Meanwhile, Square Enix has confirmed that work is already underway on the third and final installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. According to producer Yoshinori Kitase, the game’s story is complete, and development is now in full swing.

With more updates likely on the way, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is expected to continue improving on PC. Players can also take advantage of a limited-time discount on Steam until February 5, 2025, making now a great time to dive into the latest chapter of Cloud and company’s journey.
