Metaphor: ReFantazio Director recently commented about his plans on a possible game based on the Sengoku era in the coming 2025. He explained that transforming Metaphor into a series would require many years especially if the Metaphor 2 contains different characters than the original, and so, opting for a new game would be best.
Recently, there was a discussion between Resident Evil Author Hiroyuki Kobayashi and Metaphor: ReFantazio Director Katsura Hashino, as seen in a special double issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine as reported by ryokutya2089). During the discussion between the two, Hashino explains he “doesn’t have any concrete plans to make a Metaphor series”, but ” would love to make it into a series. “
I don’t have any concrete plans to make a Metaphor series,… but I would love to make it into a series. — Katsura Hashino
Metaphor: ReFantazio, developed by Studio Zero, is an action RPG released on October 11 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC to commemorate Atlus’s 35th anniversary. However the game launched to become a massive hit loved by fans who praised the implementation of a fantasy-based setting and similar gameplay and action to the Persona series.
Gaining over a million sales on release date, Metaphor: ReFantazio went on to become one of the fastest-selling games and also the studio’s most successful release till date. The possibly coming Atlus game based in the Sengoku era is said to be a “JRPG set in a world similar to BASARA” as explained by Hashino. Furthermore, fans shouldn’t expect a direct action game like they did with Metaphor: ReFantazio, but an “action game with RPG elements,” as Kobayashi stated during the discussion.
In conclusion, while Katsura Hashino has expressed his interests in positioning Metaphor: ReFantazio as a flagship title alongside Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, and in also turning it into a series, concrete steps toward this goal are yet to begin. With the Metaphor: ReFantazio series and the potential development of a Sengoku-era project unconfirmed, fans can expect these developments to unfold gradually, with significant progress likely to emerge in 2025.
