Charles Martinet Retires from Voicing Mario

Charles Martinet announced he will be stepping down from being the iconic voice of Mario. Martinet has held this role throughout Mario’s life, along with being attributed to voicing a number of other iconic characters in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Shortly after the reveal Nintendo posted a response confirming his retirement and honoring his legacy. The message also notes there will be a “special video message” with Martinet and Shigeru Miyamoto, which will be posted at a later date.

Following the reveal, IGN reached out to Nintendo and confirmed Mario’s new voice will debut in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

“While Charles is not involved in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, we’re excited to honor his legacy and contributions, including looking ahead to what he’ll be doing as a Mario Ambassador,” a Nintendo spokesperson said in a statement to IGN. “Character voice actors will be credited in the game credits, so please wait for the game to be released.”

While some might be disappointed by this news, it’s nice to see Martinet conclude his adventure on his own terms.
