Silent Hill f has been released on Steam, and some are liking the new Souls-like title, others that have played the original aren’t really pleased with the result, while others who did but never cared about the game format at all just treason their instincts. It’s all good, Silent Hill as we once knew it will never return, modern gamers aren’t apt for what the original games were, as they don’t really get the cues of true psychological horror that aren’t really present in modern entries. Seems like Ryukishi07 wasn’t able to deliver his message freely, if not, we would be hearing the resounding praise through the industry, or not.
Silent Hill f wasn’t a failure
Silent Hill f did well, mainly with the crowd who liked Silent Hill 2 remake, this really isn’t all that good because Silent Hill 2 remake flopped when it comes to delivering the feel of the original game, its not there anymore, nor the voice actors, not the power behind each feeling the original game caused. The trend continues, but this is a new entry, a spinoff to be precise, so they can try weird things like this if they please, albeit, it does not really feel like Silent Hill at all. You see, when you buy a game of a long running series, you expect it to be at least respectful to said series, this one isn’t.
Psychological horror isn’t really about terrible monsters jumpscaring you, but about the game playing with your basic senses and making you feel terrified, this isn’t terrifying really, at least not as terrifying as Silent Hill 1 was. I’m just spoiled by very good games, but unfortunately it does not seem that Silent Hill f is able to even feel that void left by the conventional psychological horror genre, maybe next time is the charm.
