Overwatch has broken expectations with the new update and decision to remove the silly 2 that the title used to have, while this still does not reflect on the Steam store page I feel like it might eventually happen. We can thank the new character that came out which is just a cat in a jet pack, the viral moment caused by that reveal managed to bring a ton of new people into the game, almost as if there was a second revival that Blizzard was cooking. At the same time, all of these announcements feel like they are trying very hard to cater to the demography of modern kids, trying to get them hooked to this game.
Overwatch crushes its competition
Battlefield 6 is lacking in players thanks to this reveal, and the best part is that this new Overwatch season didn’t even come out yet, people are desperate to go back to older live service games and once you get hooked on one you pretty much miss a reason to play any other release in the market. That’s why I believe the whole live service race must stop, and maybe Highguard’s huge failure will be the thing that puts a stop on it. 2026 might be the year we realize another Concord level event happened, and it would be quite funny to see.
Hopefully this causes that companies decide to focus on making single player games that are enjoyable to cut a bit with the whole always online slop fest that has been happening these recent years. However, seeing that Overwatch is having an uptick in players, perhaps other games of this ilk will try similar approaches by adding viral characters into their games to see if they can bring younger demographics in. The live service market is pretty volatile, what knows what can happen in the near future.
