Meta closes down VR studios amid Metaverse failure in 2026

Meta is trying to adjust the budget by cutting on VR to bet big on the two infamous vowels that is making people fed up with technology. Thanks to “AI” the only thing we are having is layoffs and massive price hikes in PC parts, all of this is caused because the current corporate trend points towards massive scaling of data centers that will only make things worse for everyone. The metaverse as a concept was something ludicrous, but this current “AI” trend takes the cake for sheer insanity, if you cut down on every person who works a job, then who is going to be your customer?

Meta becomes more slop

Three companies have been eliminated entirely thanks to this big bet, Sanzaru Games, Twisted Pixel Games, and Armature Studios, the last one being a decently big name that was ready to produce some metarverse related stuff. The whole nonsense was a fad from the pandemic era that consisted on players generating NFTs inside virtual worlds to sell it to other people. Most of this assets however were often stolen from real artists and minted in the blockchain without them knowing, which is quite similar to the thing that is happening with “AI” but in a lesser scale.

The Metaverse and NFTs died as quickly as they came, and the same will happen with the “AI” fiasco that nobody wants to deal with, the bubble is already showing signs of blowing up in a bombastic fashion. Companies have cut their workforce to rely on these LLMs that merely just regurgitate what already exists on the internet from massive illegal datasets, illegal because they have also stolen things from you, the reader. Every comment you made, every photo you uploaded, it perhaps was already fed to some of these systems that only waste resource to generate slop. Is this the right bet on Meta? I don’t think so at all.
