It seems it’s only a matter of time before AI usage becomes an integral part in game development, to a degree which makes AI disclosure for game stores completely irrelevant, according to EPIC Games CEO Tim Sweeney. On his Twitter/X account, Sweeney stated that as AI will most definitely be involved in nearly all future productions in a considerable way, the ‘Made with AI’ label or any kind of tag is already on it’s way to be absolutely pointless.
“The AI tag is relevant to art exhibits for authorship disclosure, and to digital content licensing marketplaces where buyers need to understand the rights situation. It makes no sense for game stores, where AI will be involved in nearly all future production.”
He also made fun of one user’s comments who wrote that customers deserve to know whether AI has been involved or not:
“Why stop at AI use? We could have mandatory disclosures for what shampoo brand the developer uses. Customers deserve to know lol.”
At this point, it sure looks like AI is going to play a permanent role in developing videogames, though it may be in a limited capacity and not in any form of creative control that would distort the human element which is an essential aspect of games. But if a significant part of development in automated through the use of AI, it has the potential to reduce a lot of job positions for humans and that is the main concern for AI involvement in games.
As publishers and corporations often put profit over people, AI can be used to minimize the overall human workforce which would translate as far more profitable for the companies in more ways than one, and that, is one of the more alarming issues with the entire premise of using AI for making videogames.
Overall, what do you think about Sweeney’s statements regarding AI disclaimer? Sound off in the comments section.
