Team Cherry is already working on new content for Hollow Knight: Silksong. They plan to provide significant support after the launch, similar to the successful free expansions for the original game. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen shared insights into the future of this expansive metroidvania. They confirmed that the September 4, 2025 launch is just the beginning. The developers have stated that the upcoming content roadmap will follow the example set by the first Hollow Knight, which expanded its lifespan through major, free updates, including The Grimm Troupe and the challenging Godmaster expansion.
Unlike its highly praised predecessor, Silksong is a much larger title, which affects how the development team approaches expansions. Gibson and Pellen noted that they need to be creative in adding new areas, quests, and features. They aim to avoid making the game feel “gargantuan” and overwhelming for new players exploring the kingdom of Pharloom. Despite this challenge, the team is actively working on both fresh material and previously hinted-at features. The interview confirmed that the boss Steel Assassin Sharpe and related unique encounters will be included in a future expansion. Additionally, the Village of Lions, a major feature delayed from the main release, is also planned for the post-launch content cycle.
The expansion strategy will include both small, ongoing updates to improve quality of life and larger narrative and feature releases. Since the game’s launch, Team Cherry has focused on stability patches. They have been fixing animation bugs, resolving softlock issues during traversal, and improving controller input response—all standard early support actions for a game of this scale. These technical updates aim to keep the game running smoothly and improve hit detection while the larger content packages are carefully developed behind the scenes, ensuring a polished experience when they are ready.
While new content is officially in development, Team Cherry has not shared a specific release date or official names for the upcoming expansions. Gibson and Pellen emphasized that the studio is cautious about making promises regarding specific dates. Still, they assured fans that the communication will ramp up as content becomes more certain and a timeline emerges. Players should expect the studio to “pop up when we’ve got something to talk about,” reflecting their established communication style. Their comments highlight the developer’s commitment to thoughtfully expanding the world and ensuring that the game remains accessible and well-paced throughout its expansion cycle.
