Despite getting lots of praises for bringing the traditional Battlefield experience to a free-to-play, battle royale mode with wide accessibility, one of the biggest complaints regarding Battlefield Redsec is it’s complete absence of any form of solo playing. And in a recent interview with IGN, Battlefield Redsec Design director Justin Wiebe opened up on why the battle royale mode doesn’t feature a solo playlist, however, he hinted that chances are it may get some kind of single player gameplay mode in the future.
“I would say keep your ear to the ground on the future of solos,” the dev stated which kind of sounds like a hint at things to come for Battlefield Redsec but not just yet.
And as for why the game doesn’t feature any solo experience right now, Wiebe said that the battle royale mode was designed from the ground up as a squad based, multiplayer experience:
“In my mind, that’s not something you just turn on and just say, ‘OK, solos,'” he also added that “there needs to be enough thought put into it because we built a squad-based experience. At its foundation, the game was designed for squads to play together, with each of them having tactical abilities and options, and training paths that unlock new perks. A lot of those perks are very oriented towards helping the squad, not helping the individual.”
“If we were just to throw that out and say, ‘Well, now you can just play solos, and you’re unlocking these abilities that don’t even matter to you,’ that feels like a fail.”
His words are definitely convincing, however the dev also admitted that if Battlefield Redsec does indeed get a solo mode at some point in the future, it should be done “in a way that makes sense for players, that actually takes the mechanics and makes them work for making solos play better.”
It’s also important to remember that free-to-play, battle royale modes like Redsec essentially serves as a springboard to Battlefield 6 by giving the casual FPS playerbase a taste of the core Battlefield experience. It features several hallmark design elements of the Battlefield series such as vast and expansive maps that reward tactical playing, immersive and realistic FPS action by means of fully destructible environments and more to gradually draw the non-Battlefield players into the mainline entries.
