The critical opinion of Arrowhead Game Studios‘ cooperative game, Helldivers 2, has clearly changed. The game’s recent Steam reviews have dropped to a “mixed” rating. This shift in public perception is due to ongoing stability and performance problems that have affected the game. Arrowhead CEO Shams Joranji has officially acknowledged these issues. Although the multiplayer shooter has attracted a large and active player base since its launch in February 2024, only 69% of new Steam reviews from the past 30 days have been positive. This indicates significant player frustration with the game’s current technical state.
In a straightforward message to the community on Discord, Mr. Joranji confirmed that the studio is aware of the situation and stated that the game’s stability and performance “isn’t where it should be.” He assured players that the development team is working hard to fix these problems, but he did not provide a specific timeline for when comprehensive fixes might arrive. This acknowledgment comes after several minor patches were released earlier in the month, which did not fully address the main performance complaints leading to the current backlash.
The community’s complaints are specific and mainly focus on the PC version. Players often experience issues such as freezing, significant lag, and stuttering during gameplay. Additionally, critics have noted the game’s large file size and a lack of optimization for solid-state drives (SSDs). Some community members believe that development resources may have been unevenly focused on content updates and the recent late-August launch on the Xbox platform. This may have hurt the necessary efforts for bug fixes and optimization on other established platforms.
While the current technical problems are clear, Helldivers 2’s overall lifetime review average still sits at a “mostly positive” rating. The game has faced waves of negative feedback before, including organized review-bombing campaigns sparked by initial server issues, controversial weapon balance changes, and the now-removed requirement for PlayStation Network accounts. Arrowhead has shown it can bounce back from such criticism. However, the studio must urgently deliver the promised performance improvements to regain the game’s technical integrity and the trust of its dedicated player base.
