Mundfish, the developer of 2023’s first person shooter Atomic Heart, has just announced a sequel titled Atomic Heart 2 along with a multiplayer spin-off game set in the same Universe named The Cube. Both announcements took place during this year’s Summer Game Fest and turn the previously self contained Atomic Heart into a fullblown franchise.

Taking place after the events of the first Atomic Heart, which was set in a retro-futuristic Soviet Union of the 50’s, Atomic Heart 2 starts with the game world “on the brink of collapse”, and will have the players visit a wide variety of unique and memorable areas. And though the current direction of the story is a bit vague at this point, Mundfish says the narrative of Atomic Hear 2 is “on a global scale”, which definitely sounds exciting and ambitious.

The Role Playing elements of the first game will be making a comeback in Atomic Heart 2, but in deeper and more meaningful ways along with a dual-wield combat system which will let players combine both tech abilities with standard melee weapons and guns. The game will allow players to form their own unique combination of weapons and attacks to mow down enemies, which definitely sounds visceral and far more action oriented than it’s predecessor.

However, no release date was announced for Atomic Heart 2, as of yet. But there’s more as developer Mundfish has also unveiled The Cube, which is a multiplayer spin-off title that takes place after the events of the first Atomic Heart.

Atomic Heart

“Several years after the events of Atomic Heart, the world stands on the brink of a new threat,” reads the official announcement. “A mysterious giant levitating structure known as The Cube has become the epicenter of increasingly dangerous phenomena, and in order to save humanity, players must plunge deep into its secrets–and survive.”

In The Cube, the structure of the game world will change forms and shapes constantly, and has an “equation” inside it that can alter the fabric of reality. The MMO-based title will have “persistent progression” that won’t be stopped by the players’ failure, which definitely sounds refreshing from the standpoint of a multiplayer game.

However, like Atomic Heart 2, The Cube doesn’t have a confirmed release window yet. Both titles are set to arrive on PC as well as the consoles, though.
